At Troop 638, the safety and well-being of our Scouts is our top priority. Consistent with Scouting America’s updated standards, all adults interacting with Scouts must now complete the new Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT), which replaces the old Youth Protection Training (YPT).
New Name & Format
The training formerly known as Youth Protection Training (YPT) has been replaced by the Safeguarding Youth Training (SYT), launched in May 2025.
More Comprehensive Content
SYT includes refreshed material covering not only abuse prevention but also broader aspects of safety, structured around the SAFE framework:
Supervision
Assessment of risks
Fitness & skills
Equipment & environment
Modernized Approach
The course integrates digital safety, real volunteer scenarios, and expert-led discussions to make it more relevant and engaging.
Duration & Flexibility
The new training takes approximately 90 minutes and can be paused and resumed later.
Annual Refreshers Required
After completing SYT, volunteers must take a short annual refresher (around 15–20 minutes) to stay current with safety protocols.
Transition Timeline
If you’ve recently completed YPT, your current certification remains valid—but only until May 31, 2026. After that date, everyone must have completed SYT.
